Young and successful Mrs. Otara Chandiram, Managing Director of one of the country's famous brands and fashion store ODEL, was adjudged as the Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of the Year 2000 yesterday. She was given the coveted award at a glittering ceremony last night at the BMICH. In its competition, running for the sixth year, the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCIL) the largest private sector lobby group, recognised a host of outstanding large, medium and small scale entrepreneurs at provincial and national level for their contribution to the socio-economic growth of the country. By Ashwin Hemmathagama ODEL has given a look to its trend-setting fashion store suiting the festive season along with the motto 'Intelligent' and 'Beautiful'. The dramatic shop changeover, which captures a unique look, is an annual phenomenon, ODEL Managing Director Ms. Otara Chandiram said. "Our change demonstrates how fashion should look in a widely celebrated season as Christmas. With our new motto we plan to give customers bright ideas throughout the festive season. This time we chose white as the official colour which will be supported by the other decoratives," she said. The new look and other improvements are aimed at creating excitement among consumers and boost sales as business has been depressed. "It is true that the business has been low during the past 6 months, especially since the terrorist attacks at Katunayake airport and in the US. I believe we should be optimistic. Fortunately the businesses are picking up and we are looking for the best with a new government just around the corner. Some in the business community believe the general elections, which are to be held on the 5th will ruin the season. But I would like to mention that we did have this sort of a time some time back which we managed to overcome," Otara said. ODEL is widely acknowledged as the best store in the country that offers a superior world class shopping experience to its customers, both local and foreign, throughout the year. With the new look for the festive season the message being promoted is; ODEL is also the brightest store around town.
