Nets N Sea (Pvt) Ltd., a fishnet manufacturing plant with Indian collaboration, which has been in production from February 2001, in the Mirigama Export Processing Zone, is exporting its products to Dubai, Zambia, Nigeria and Malawi.

Managing Director Erwin Weerasinghe said: “The bulk of our production goes into the local market. We are also awaiting an order to Papua New Guinea.” The company hopes to initially export its production around South Asia.

Nets N Sea is a $48 million investment unit of Indian giant Amitech (Pvt) Ltd., Goa. Amitech is in turn under technical collaboration of Mimmingen Textile Engineering Co., Germany.

Nets N Sea puts out gill nets of two to nine ply, working at 60 percent capacity accounting for six tonnes of production per month. The nylon twine needed as raw material for this local Board of Investment venture is imported from India and Korea, according to Weerasinghe.

Amitech, India is an established undertaking, which, besides producing gill nets for the Indian fisheries industry, is one of two Indian manufacturers of machinery for turning out fishnets, twine and yarn. It also manufactures twisting machines and length stretching machines. These machines could be converted to produce single and double knot fishnets, as well as multifilament and monofilament nets.

Nets N Sea works with six net manufacturing machines, and length stretching machines.
