The LTTE is reportedly trying to rehabilitate its ace arms smuggler - the most wanted Kumaran Pathmanathan alias Tharmalingam Shamugam Kumaran alias KP - by making him a member of its peace negotiating team.

The Sunday Times reported that LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran had asked the Norwegian facilitators to find out if the Sri Lankan government had any objections to "Shanmugam Kumaran Tharmalingam" being part of the LTTE's negotiating team. The Norwegians found that "Shanmugam Kumaran Tharmalingam" had not come to their adverse notice.

The Sunday Times report said that since "Shanmugam Kumaran Tharmalignam" was none other than KP (despite his 23 aliases and masks), and wanted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in India as per an Interpol Red Notice about him, the government "could not heed the request without rupturing relations with India."

It is not clear why Prabhakaran wants to rehabilitate KP - a man of such wide contacts, as a defence expert put it. Perhaps with the Interpol, CIA, and MI-5 after him, and with Thailand becoming inhospitable, KP is insecure.

There is another school of thought which says that KP is being rehabilitated as a prelude to being replaced by an yet unknown and shadowy figure. The recent failures, in which two ships were tracked and sunk, and one was arrested in port in Indonesia, may have called for a replacement.
