An earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered tsunamis or tidal waves as high as five metres lashed Sri Lanka's eastern and southern shores on Sunday, December 26, 2004. Over 28, 000 people of all walks  of life are believed killed and over 100,000 families lost their dwellings and belongings.

Current Situation 

        Situation Reports from various agencies
       Situation Reports have been coming in from the 26th of
        December with details of the affected districts. These
        Sit-Reps have been received from the Government of Sri  
        Lanka, United Nations Agencies,
bilateral donors and NGOs,
        and continue to be updated regularly.

        Latest Figures on Tsunami Disaster (31 Dec at 1030)
       Details of the affected communities including numbers
       displaced and missing. These details are updated two times 
       a day.

Needs 

All request for relief items and humanitarian assistance are being updated on this site on an hourly basis and matched against recourses and supplies available. Please e-mail all such requests to ramraj.narasimhan@undp.org.


Minutes of Meetings for UN & International agencies

All UN agencies working on humanitarian assistance in Sri Lanka, bilateral donors, UNDAC Team and representatives of the Government of Sri Lanka meet on a daily basis at 1100 to discuss the current situation and strategize their humanitarian assistance and relief plans for the next 24 hours.
